New psychological studies explain what history has long shown to be true—that war holds a deep attraction for large numbers of people in most cultures around the world. In accepting and understanding this hard truth, we may be better equipped to bring peace on earth. A timely new edition of his book The Psychology of War arrived last fall, just as the White House began beating the drums—and much of the American public eagerly fell in line—for a new war." Adapted from LeShan's The Psychology of War: Comprehending its Mystique and Madness, published in spring 2003.
Submited by nbr 22, November 2008 Sat, 22 Nov 2008 08:41:29 GMT http://www.utne.com/2003-01-01/why-we-love-war.aspx http://www.utne.com/2003-01-01/why-we-love-war.aspx Children's Overregularization and Its Implications for Cognition A central goal for cognitive science is to discover basic computational mechanisms that are recruited throughout cognition (Gallistel, 1994). In this paper I propose two mechanisms which underlie learning and generalization. In particular, I propose that humans have both a statistical mechanism which extracts, collects, and tabulates statistical contingencies in the environment, and a rule mechanism which suppresses variation between examples within a category, thereby treating all instances of a category as equal members. Of course, neither mechanism is entirely novel; indeed, much of the debate in cognitive psychology concerns such mechanisms. My goal here is to argue that both mechanisms are necessary. Section 2 presents detailed arguments that argue for the existence of both mechanisms within a single narrow linguistic domain, inflection. Section 3 proposes that these same two types of mechanisms are used in many other domains of cognition.
Submited by davidar 22, November 2008 Sat, 22 Nov 2008 06:54:46 GMT http://www.psych.nyu.edu/gary/marcusArticles/marcus%202000%20tilburg%20chapter.pdf http://www.psych.nyu.edu/gary/marcusArticles/marcus%202000%20tilburg%20chapter.pdf Do five simple things a day to stay sane, say scientists - Times Online Submited by nbr 20, November 2008 Thu, 20 Nov 2008 22:06:47 GMT http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/health/mental_health/article4988978.ece http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/health/mental_health/article4988978.ece Imagini VisualDNA Submited by ppmartin 20, November 2008 Thu, 20 Nov 2008 22:42:55 GMT http://dna.imagini.net/friends http://dna.imagini.net/friends Queendom Tests, Tests, Tests and more Tests, The biggest testing center in the world with personality, intelligence, relationship, career and mental health related tests.
Submited by ppmartin 20, November 2008 Thu, 20 Nov 2008 22:42:46 GMT http://www.queendom.com http://www.queendom.com Future Of Web Apps - London 2008 Submited by mdrechsler 20, November 2008 Thu, 20 Nov 2008 22:06:44 GMT http://events.carsonified.com/fowa/2008/london/content http://events.carsonified.com/fowa/2008/london/content The Monroe Institute Submited by praguebob 20, November 2008 Thu, 20 Nov 2008 22:16:09 GMT http://www.monroeinstitute.com http://www.monroeinstitute.com Hyperthymesia, explained in cartoon form, by Greg Williams Hyperthymesia is "excessive autobiographical memory" and is very unusual.
