I'm clipping it mainly because it shows the slipperiness of the term "terrorist" in modern-day political speech. A lot of critics have jumped on Palin for saying that she wasn't "sure" if the word "terrorist" would be appropriate for abortion-clinic bombers. To be fair, the quotation has often been taken out of context. She is pretty clear in condemning such bombings, even if she's uncomfortable with labelling them "terrorism." (However, the deeper point is that she seems to have a special category of violent criminal for whom she considers the word "terrorist" to be appropriate, and apparently Bill Ayers is the only person who fits in that category, as far as I can tell.) Presumably Palin associates the idea of "terrorism" with a kind of anti-American ideology, whatever that means, and isn't sure whether abortion-clinic bombers truly fall into that group. Prothero claims that widespread American ignorance about religion -- with regard to world religions like Islam and Hinduism, but also familiar forms of Christianity -- amounts to a national security liability. Prothero (Boston University) debates Barry Lynn (Americans United for Separation of Church and State) Prothero kicks Lynn's ass, if you ask me. Lynn comes across looking desperate. However, if you check my Diigo annotations, you'll see that in the antepenultimate and penultimate points (Prothero, then Lynn), I think an important issue comes up, namely, how to deal with the inherent contestedness of any tradition. Whose version of Christianity, or whatever, do you teach? This doesn't seem like a problem that ought to stymie Prothero's proposal, but it is extraordinarily thorny, much more difficult to deal with than it might seem at first.
